A panel event on the topic: Housing and High Tech in the Bay Area: what's going on and how do we fix it?

6:00p -- Discussion
7:00p -- Socialize, more Food & Drink
Amid a high-tech boom that has added 70,000 new jobs to the city since 2010, San Francisco is embroiled in one of the most acute and visible housing shortages in the country. Protests have blocked tech buses that shuttle workers back and forth between Mountain View, Menlo Park and the city. Condo prices, rents and evictions have risen as the city added fewer than 5,000 units between 2010 and 2014 even as nearly 40,000 new residents arrived in San Francisco. City legislators are worried about the loss of historic businesses, the widening income inequality gap and the loss of lower-income and ethnic communities that have called San Francisco home for decades. What can we do? And what is contributing to this at a federal, state and local level?
Please join us for a panel discussion moderated by Kim-Mai Cutler, a technology journalist who's led local coverage of the issue. Our four panelists are Jed Kolko, Trulia's Chief Economist and VP of Analytics, Jeff Buckley, Senior Advisor on Housing to Mayor Edwin M Lee at the City and County of San Francisco, Luis Granados, the Executive Director for the Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA), and Egon Terplan, the Regional Planning Director at the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association (SPUR). We'll discuss some of the pressures driving the housing crisis in the city and some of the policy solutions that both San Francisco and other metropolitan regions under similar constraints have pursued.
For venue information or to RSVP, please contact email@example.com. Drinks and light food will be served.
